The essence and philosophy of apartment interior design, or of a given space
Apartment interior design, like that of any private or public space, is the art and skill of creating a functional and beautiful environment. Changes in lifestyle, social relations, technology and materials create a new view of apartment interior design, because the way the space itself is inhabited also changes and develops.
The interior design of apartments, homes and public spaces is about finding harmony that involves all the senses — visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory.
As lifestyle and technology change, so do the requirements of apartment interior design: the space must take in more and more functions — a large, multifunctional kitchen, a specially designed home office or media room, security systems and a “smart home”, a multifunctional bathroom as a place to relax and a spa experience, and more.
Interior design recognises that beauty is an essential part of daily life, and so the personal design of an apartment or home has a substantial role in the lives of its occupants. Every design is influenced by history, tradition, custom, nature and a shared sense of what is beautiful and useful. Apartment interior design can follow fashion, acknowledge it or set it. And every personal apartment design expresses someone’s thoughts, feelings, dreams and memories, so it should also have individual traits.

There is no doubt that the interior design of our apartment or home is a vital moment in renovation and furnishing, because we all want to inhabit a pleasant, beautiful, harmonious space where we feel well, safe and calm. The home is intimate and personal; whether we realise it or not, its atmosphere makes us feel a certain way while we are there. So apartment interior design can provoke happiness and balance, charge us emotionally, encourage thought and stimulate creativity.
Apartment interior design should be thought through the attitudes, life and way of living of its occupants, and of course reflect their personality and aesthetic tastes. It should also be coherent, conceived as a whole and connected through its elements. So in preparing and carrying out a design it is important not merely to gather things we like that signal luxury to us, but to choose so that the objects correspond, speak to each other and form a meaningful unity.
Not every object in an apartment interior needs to be stunning and attention-seeking on its own. That would produce a mix of visual stimuli, confuse the senses, and in the end the design would be unbalanced, inharmonious, confusing and unpleasant to live in.
It is wrong to judge an object on its own and think that if we like it, it will sit well in our apartment. Sometimes something that does not seem attractive by itself will sit beautifully and connect with the whole design. What matters is that each piece complements the others — in form, colour, size and so on — to achieve a balanced, harmonious apartment interior. In good design we can even use one object to emphasise or strengthen another: a space, a colour, a motif, a form. That connected result is not merely good apartment design, but a stunning one.

Some spaces are small, narrow, irregular, with protruding elements that seem impossible to turn into a beautiful, exciting place. Then apartment interior design is a harder, more precise project — but never impossible. We can make an architectural element we dislike “disappear”, barely noticeable, by emphasising another, using the elements and principles of design. And in some cases we can turn a defect into an effect, transforming the “thing” into an element of the apartment design.
When we try to achieve a balanced, harmonious apartment interior that excites and stuns — that is a form of art — we must understand the connection between elements that may seem incompatible at first, yet form a conceptual unity and correspond so well that they seem made for this space. If that task is too much and you still want an impeccable, intriguing, exciting apartment design, you can always trust an excellent, carefully chosen designer to do it for you.
Balance in apartment interior design
As we said above, balance and harmony are the leading principles in successful apartment or home interior design.
Balance in apartment interior design always relates to the space itself — its architecture, size, form and natural light. In preparing a project one always considers ceiling height and the layout and size of existing doors and windows, or their future placement, in relation to the room and the requirements of the design.
Balance, as in life, is a leading principle in preparing and carrying out apartment interior design. In an unbalanced space one would feel uncomfortable. So, except in rare cases where imbalance is a deliberate effect and usually not about apartment living, balance is always sought.
In a balanced apartment interior the objects visually merge and complement each other in form, size and texture. That means one part of the space does not dominate the other in the overall design of the apartment or home.
Harmony in apartment interior design

Harmony in apartment interior design refers to balance, or visual comfort. It also refers to the proportions and size relationships of objects to each other and to the whole space. Harmony is also the repetition of certain characteristic elements that set the “rhythm” of the space.
Harmonious, balanced apartment interior design means one can move and stay freely in the space. Then all the principles and elements of design work together, in concert, in the making of a skilful, stunning apartment interior.
